MARTHA EMMANUEL: SUCCOUR FOR EXPECTANT MOTHERS AS MARTHA’S PREGNACARE PHASE 5 HOLDS

…….It was a soothing experience for over 500 expectant mothers from the 31 Local Government Areas of the state, Wednesday, at Ibom hall, Uyo, as they recieved free medicare, cash and as well took delivery of maternity packs courtesy of Martha’s Pregnacare Outreach.

At the fifth edition of the programme themed: “Pregnancy, Child Birth and Beyond,” the outreach is part of Family Empowerment and Youth Reorientation Path-Initiative’s effort at reducing infant morbidity and maternal mortality in the state.

In her remarks during event, FEYReP’s founder, Dr. (Mrs.) Martha Udom Emmanuel said the outreach over the years has been able to educate and assist expectant mothers cope with the demands of pregnancy.

The first lady took out time to enlighten the pregnant mothers on various health challenges during and after pregnancy, and encouraged that they endeavour to seek proper medical attention regularly.

Dr. Emmanuel stressed that she wasn’t against the practice of traditional birth attandants, but that she was rather concerned about the procedure of delivery in those homes, saying “there have been unwarranted cases of death and transmission of deadly diseases from them.”

She futher advised the women on good dieting, family planning, and the need to support their husbands by engaging in economic activity that would ameliorate suffering after pregnancy.

Earlier, the coordinator of FEYReP, Mrs. Ime Inyang appreciated the governor’s wife for the programme, averring that it is geard towards addressing pregnancy related issues.

While admonishing the women to adhere wholly to the teachings recieved, Inyang restated Mrs. Emmanuel’s unbridled commitment to the welfare of women and pointed out that more of such programme will be birth.

There was a health talk by Dr. Christy Akwaowo on the topic: The Role of Nutrition and Child Delivery, while Dr. Dan Sunday spoke on the topic : Anti-natal and Postnatal Delivery Challenges, and Dr Victoria Ekponne on the topic: Cleanliness is Next to Godliness: Hygiene in Pregnancy.

Goodwill messages from government functionaries were given in support of the programme.

In a vote of thanks, Mrs. Blessing Uyimeobong from Itu local government area speaking on behalf of other expectant mothers, appreciated the governor’s wife for the educative platform provided them and promised to heed to the advice given.
