…………………..It was a day of great significance Sunday, as the speaker of Akwa Ibom House of Assembly, Barr Onofiok Luke became a toast for the elders and leaders of Eket and Uyo senatorial districts who converged at the Ikot Nya, Nsit Ibom country home of Otuekong Idongesit Nkanga.
The event was a thank you visit by the Eket Senatorial District Elders to their Uyo district counterparts, to express appreciation for the overwhelming support given to their son, Governor Udom Emmanuel, resulting in his emergence and successes recorded so far in the saddle.
However, they Eket elders whose position was conveyed by Chief Nduese Essien, the chairman of the forum, eulogised Barr Onofiok Luke for his dazzling performance since assumption of office in December 2015.
“Infact he was the one we supported from the beginning as the right choice for the position, and despite being denied at first, he later emerged at the time he did, and we can all see that he is performing creditably well.”
Chief Nduese Essien, a former two-term federal lawmaker said that the success enjoyed by Governor Emmanuel has been made possible by the smooth relationship between the state House of Assembly and the executive arm of government.
He said no matter the good intentions of the governor, if he fails to get the backing of the legislature, his vision would not be realised, and commended Speaker Luke’s leadership prowess in the state legislature.
We must commend Uyo for producing such a dynamic son as speaker, he has been able to effectively galvanize the support his colleagues in the House of Assembly and we are seeing the result.
Speaking in the same vein, Otuekong Idongesit Nkanga, the Chairman of Board of Trustees of Uyo Senatorial District Elders commended Onofiok Luke for his ability to liaise with Governor Emmanuel for the development of the state.
“They called you an iron seal, no longer rubber stamp. Don’t be deterred but continue to partner with the governor in the overall interest of our people,” said Nkanga.
This view was collaborated by the deputy leader of Uyo Senatorial District Elder’s Forum, Dr. Val Attah who described Barr Luke as a man as the anchor point for the future of the state.
He said as Uyo elders they were satisfied that Barr Luke has justified his current position.
“Speaker, we are grooming you up for a greater tomorrow. We see you taking over from us. There is a generational change and you have not failed us,” Dr Attah said.
Highlight of the event was the overwhelming endorsement of Governor Emmanuel for re-election in 2019 and the charge that all other politicians seeking election for other offices can only gain their support if such interests are tied to the re-election of the governor.
