Unlawful Arrest and Detention of Ibomplaza News Blogger by Hon. Charles Udoh

We want to draw the attention of the general public to the unlawful arrest and detention of Mr Bassey Samuel Jnr, CEO/ Editor-in-chief Ibomplaza News Media, on the order of Honorable Commissioner of Information, Sir Charles Udoh, on account of alleged insult on his person.

Let it be known that Mr Bassey Samuel was arrested on Friday, 17th April, 2020 and held incommunicado was taken to A’Division police station with instruction from the Commissioner that no one should have access to him according to our source.

This is total breach of fundamental human rights and it’s against the law.

Recall that on the 30th of March, 2020 Ibomplaza News posted, “Akwa Ibom State Ministry of Information, under Mr. Charles Udoh has failed strategically for his inability to mobilize nor address bloggers and online media practitioners to properly join the sensitization campaign fight against COVID-19 in the state as online media community threatened to go offline due to high cost of data in running free PR for the system,”. Should this post is viewed by the Hon. Commissioner as alleged “insult”, we said sorry sir.

We want the Honorable Commissioner to know that this is a trying period for humanity economically and otherwise, for the family he used to fend for not being able to reach out to Mr Bassey Samuel for good three days now, is worrisome and depressed.

We hereby call on well meaning individuals, political stakeholders and the Nigerian Police force, Akwa Ibom command to prevail on the Honorable Commissioner in this case to ensure his safety, immediate release and freedom to reintegrate with his family in this period of lockdown nationwide due to COVID-19 pandemic.
