AKWA IBOM STATE GOVERNEMENT COMMITTED TO RETIREES’ WELFARE | Ibomplaza News

…Earlier today, Monday, December 16th, 2019, a small group of retired primary school teachers organized a protest to the gate of the Government House in Uyo. It is worth noting here that Akwa Ibom State Government under the leadership of Governor Udom Emmanuel has endeavoured since he was sworn in, on May 29th, 2015, to pay the pensions and gratuities of retired civil servants. One of the very first acts the Governor had performed shortly after being sworn in, in 2015, was to pay a backlog of pensions and gratuities of retied civil servants from 2001 to 2011.

He has since then; given the lean resources available continued to pay the pensions and gratuities of retired civil servants, a fact that was amply displayed when they (retired civil servants) formed part of the stalwart supporters who worked for the re-election of the Governor during the elections earlier this year.

It is also worth noting here that several states in the Federation have owed backlogs of pensions and gratuities running into decades, but that is not the case with Akwa Ibom State. The Governor has always said he is a proud product of retired school teachers and even though the payment of retired teachers is purely within the purview of Local Government Councils, has, always ensured that retired school teachers are paid their entitlements as with other retired civil servants. We hate to believe that the actions of the few protesters have political connotations as some of their utterances will lend one to believe there were being sponsored.

The interest of the retired civil servants will continue to be uppermost in the minds of Governor Udom Emmanuel and that is a verifiable fact.
