………………The Inspector General of Police, IGP Ibrahim Kpotun Idris, says Akwa Ibom State was chosen for the 2017 South South Security summit, because of the significance attached to governance in the state.
Speaking during a courtesy call on Governor Udom Emmanuel in his office shortly before the commencement of the National Security Summit held in the state, Mr Idris said, “Akwa Ibom State is one of the very very few states we have in this country where you can see that security has been taken as a very serious issue”
The IG who extolled the robust relationship between the police and the Akwa Ibom state government, urged other states to take a cue. “Your Excellency these are issues we believe other states can take a cue from in their government, to ensure that the country itself is properly managed at various level.”
Mr Idris said he was pleased to visit the state to convey the appreciation of the security agency to Governor Emmanuel for his commitment to peace and to good governance in the affairs of the country.
“We are here therefore obviously to appreciate your commitment to peace, to appreciate your commitment to good governance in the affairs of this country.”
He said Akwa Ibom is a state where security issue is taken with utmost seriousness, maintaining that since his arrival in the state the previous day, he has been able sleep with his both eyes closed.
The Police IG reiterated the commitment of the force to protect lives and property of citizens of the country, saying “We shall police with integrity.”

That’s the Nation’s Security Summit which we are holding in the South South Zone of this country.
He expressed readiness to continue partnering the state government because of its strategic role in the success of security programmes in the country.
He announced that community policing has been re-launched in the country as part of efforts to bring the force closer the people, assuring that as a people-oriented force, the police will do everything to satisfy the needs of the people they are required to serve.
Welcoming the Inspector General of Police, Governor Emmanuel promised to deepen the smooth relationship he has with the police to ensure a more secure, safe and peaceful society for his people.
Mr Emmanuel said the police remained the largest and closest security agency to people, especially at the grassroots, saying his people are always more comfortable to go and relate with the police on their security infractions.
He used the occasion to task the police IG on the increasing rate of rape cases especially against minors, and urged that the police step up its efforts in the prosecution of culprits.
“It is very traumatizing at times when you see a five year old girl, raped by an adult. Believe me I can’t sleep or eat that day. I want to believe that if the police also puts pressure on the judiciary over this heinous crime against humanity, the judiciary will also sit up.”
The state chief executive used the occasion to reiterate his support to the national men’s football team, Super Eagles in their world cup qualifying match against Zambia, in Uyo this weekend.
He said, “I am as serious at this football match as if I am the coach, because everything counts for this country and we must always stand up to be Number one.”
